THE CERRADO

Known as the “Heart of Brazil”, the “Cradle of Waters”, or the “Brazilian Savannah”, the Cerrado is the country's second largest biome and one of the richest in biodiversity in the world.

The flora is mainly made up of low trees, shrubs with thick bark and leaves and twisted trunks. These characteristics give the cerrado a raw but also dreamlike appearance.

Many plants have fruits with a peculiar flavor, such as pequi, licuri and cagaita, which are widely used in local cuisine, as well as being food for the region's animals.

The diverse fauna includes some endangered species, such as the maned wolf, the giant anteater and the puma.

The Cerrado plays an important role in Brazil's water balance. It acts as a water reservoir and is where the springs of the country's important river basins are found.

Today it is one of the regions that has been most exploited by the agricultural industry, which represents a threat to the biome.

Human activity in the region is responsible for deforestation and the reduction of biodiversity, as well as driving fires, which spread easily during the dry season.

Conservation is necessary for the maintenance of one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world and for the balance of our waters.
Preserving the Cerrado is keeping the “heart of Brazil” beating.
